Communication Society Holds Full Circle
“Know your specialization, that’s when you can compete… Always remember that the only boundaries are in your mind.”
This is shared by Mr. Efstathios “Steve” Fillis, a multimedia specialist who has been in the media industry for almost 23 years and has worked with Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation, BBC, CNN, Universal Studios among others in his talk at the Full Circle Symposium with Mass Communication and Media Arts students at the Multi-purpose Hall on July 23, 2008.
In his discussion, Mr. Fillis emphasized that media has become a very powerful instrument in today’s society that a practitioner must be accountable and responsible in his works.
“Almost all the programs today are being geared to consumerism,” he said. So, he reminded SISC students to become really responsible with their actions-with the things they will write about, movies they will film, plays they will produce and the likes. This is related to what the professors of Southville would always inculcate to the students in their lectures and group works- anchored with the SISC Student Academic Integrity Code (SAIC)- to be committed to observe, practice, and pursue the highest degree of ethnical integrity and honesty in academic conduct-not to cheat, lie, or plagiarize to gain an academic advantage over fellow students or gain undeserved academic credits in all their academic requirements.
From being a 3rd assistant director to being a 1st assistant director in Hollywood, Mr. Fillis has been exposed to different media practices, thus he advised SISC students who wish to break in Hollywood two things- to master the English Language and to be ready with the academic and practical credentials. He further said, “In America, Filipinos are welcomed depending on the region you are planning to work…In Canada, Filipinos are welcomed… I suggest that you start preparing yourself especially now that you are still students …Get connected with the people in the industry…”
There will be another talk for MassComm and Media Arts students come September.
